This resource is designed for the NEW anthology World and Lives and focuses on the poem Thirteen by Caleb Femi. It is fully differentiated and includes a range of different approaches to poetry analysis including different tasks for different abilities, an examplar paragraph and peer teaching. This is a stand alone lesson and concludes with an exam style question on this text with a brief plan of how students might approach it. Student speak AOs are used to encourage students to link their responses to the mark scheme relevant to this part of the specification. This is fully accessible with plenty of stretch for your most able students. This resource includes ideas about relevant context linked to the textual analysis, and structure and language analysis guidance and tasks. This lesson offers KS5 students a step by step guide to how to approach an essay question and respond to it cogently and effectively ensuring their response is focused and supported. I created this lesson in response to students saying they knew their texts, but weren't sure how to construct them, their written style improved dramatically after delivering this lesson.

This lesson teaches students the STILT(s) acronym for poetry comparison, this could be used to teach comparison skills as well as teaching specific comparison points on these two poems from the Edexcel Relationship Collection. The lesson is challenging and aims to take students grades to the top levels. It includes engaging 'thunks', activities, guidance, exemplar paragraphs and guided questions and processes that could be applied to other pairs of poems. This lesson is designed for teaching on the International GCSE specification or as an Unseen Poem as it both explores this poem and teaches students how to approach a previously unseen text. The activities are engaging, active and nurture enquiry in a supported way.

This resource is designed to support pinpointed revision. When students struggle to answer one type of question, the best way to improve grades is to offer them multiple questions of the same type to aid progression. This resource offers exactly that: the first four questions are differentiated in numerous different ways, exemplar responses, clozed activities, top tips to guide responses without giving it all to the student and open questioning, whilst the remaining six questions are straightforward tasks. These resources offer a complete study of the poem through encouraging both student engagement and independence in different measures. This lesson, uses Jigsaw Activities and a highly effective Challenge Task, peer assessment, discussion points and sharing learning strategies. This lesson would work well if you are teaching both the Cambridge IGCSE specification or as an Unseen Poem from KS3 on. This lesson introduces KS3 students to the conventions of the Detective Genre using short film clips and a fun game. This works really well as either the first lesson of a topic on this genre or as a transition day activity as the students will enjoy the lesson and be left feeling that studying English is not always reading and writing.

This lesson is highly differentiated, with learning goal sheets to ensure progress is evident and checked/reviewed at several checkpoints during the lesson. It also includes a detailed lesson plan and group activities that are then jigsawed to ensure all students are responsible for their own learning. I have alphabetised the poem for use as a starter activity and created a more accessible question sheet for students likely to achieve grade 2/3. This is a really good lesson to show the students working harder than you do!

An outstanding observation lesson based on David Didau's Slow Writing Technique. These resources include an exam style starter activity, exemplar writing and activity, strategies for improving writing, progress checker, peer assessment and a lesson plan. I have used this lesson several times and every time get excellent evidence of progress across a full range of age groups....

This lesson is an excellent introduction the feminist background and theory, it uses an extract from Charlotte Gilman Perkins 'The Yellow Wallpaper' and leads students through a feminist reading of the text. This lesson includes references and explanations of 'Herstory' and 'L'ecriture Feminine' and proved highly progressive with my year 12 students.

This resource takes you through a range of activities that explore language, form and structure alongside thematic links and theory. This lesson incorporates drama activities and creative activities to ensure students enjoy learning about Shakespeare's play. This lesson will take between 5-7 hours in teaching time. This is also available as part of a complete unit of work on this text if preferred.

This resource includes a worksheet (8.1) as an introduction to this aspect of Literacy. The powerpoint is designed to follow on from the completion of the worksheet and serves to check the answers to the worksheet whilst also including further tasks to ensure learning is secure and can be applied independently. This fun lesson teaches the accurate use of commas in lists and draws on a Geography based activity to evidence the students application of knowledge.
